The North West is primarily an area of agriculture and mining, but is also home to game farms and guest resorts for those who wish to get away from city life.
The North West province contains the Pilanesberg National Park which offers game viewing in a malaria-free environment.
Other attractions include villages such as Moruleng, the De Wildt Cheetah Research Centre and Boekenhoutfontein, the former state president Paul Kruger's restored home.

The North West region of South Africa offers sunshine throughout the year. Mafikeng is the capital city of the region and it is indicative of the region as a whole, with summer temperatures ranging from 22 to 34 degrees Celsius. During the summer short thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, providing a refreshing contrast to the warm temperatures. In the winter temperatures are around 16 degrees Celsius on average making it pleasant to explore the region at any time of year.
