The Limpopo region is situated in the north of South Africa. Limpopo offers many wide expanses, impressive mountain ranges and sacred lakes. The famous upside down Baobab Tree is found to the north of the region. The Waterberg, Soutpansberg and Magoebaskloof offer hiking trails, waterfalls and crystal clear pools. The Tropic of Capricorn lies in the Limpopo region, around 40 miles from Pietersburg. A column marks the exact location of the Tropic of Capricorn and during the summer solstice the sun is directly 90 degrees in relation to the earth.
The town of Bela-Bela is famous for its natural hot springs, a popular attraction with visitors to the Limpopo area. The spring water is rich in limestone and a pleasant 53 degrees Centigrade. Many visitors are eager to experience the alleged healing propoperties of the springs. There are also many game farms in the town which offer a range of activities from golfing to hiking trails.
The Arend Dieperink Museum host an interesting collection of information on the history of the local area. Exhibits range from ancient to very modern with displays on the ape men from Makapans Cave to the Anglo-Boer War. The nearby Makapans Valley contains the Makapans Caves which hosts a 'caves through the ages' exhibit.
Limpopo Weather
Limpopo, located at the north of the country, offers very dry and warm, weather to tourists. Whilst some cities in the region can reach temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, the cities of Polokwane and Pietersburg, the regions capital, are more pleasant. Thunderstorms can be common in the afternoons and evenings as a result of the high temperatures.
