Gauteng is the smallest but most densely populated region in South Africa. It is also the most industrialised area, home to Johannesburg and Pretoria. Johannesburg is also known as Jo'burg City, Jozi, eGoli or JHB and offers a countless selection of restaurants, shops, entertainment, sports and arts. Pretoria is host to one of the world's top zoos and the Union Buildings, the seat of government. As well as this Gauteng has much to offer in terms of scenery and nature with the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve a very popular site with tourists. The Magaliesburg mountains north of Pretoria also offers resorts and amenities for those who enjoy the outdoors with facilities for fishing, hiking, bird watching, horse riding and much more.
Johannesburg Zoo is a non-profit organisation dedicated to conserving over 300 species of animal. It is one of the few places in the world where you can witness a white lion. Johannesburg Zoo is also the only South African to have successfully bred Siberian Tigers. The zoo offers a wide programme of "edutainment" to help educate visitors in a variety of fun ways.
The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site is located in the North West of Gauteng. The site is made up of many caves over an expansive area of 183 square miles. A 2.3 million year old fossil was found in the Sterkfontein Caves on the site.
Gold Reef City is a large amusement park situated in Johannesburg. The site was once the location of an old gold mine and maintains a retro theme based on the 1886 gold rush in Witwatersrand. The staff wear period costumes and buildings are designed to give the feel of the late 19th century. There is also a gold mining museum to visit in the park.
The Apartheid Museum is a great place to visit while in Gauteng. This leading tourist attraction was built by the casino developers in order to contribute to fulfil their social responsibility to the area. The museum features photographs, metal cages and replays of apartheid scenes and is located next to the Gold Reef City Casino. Even entrance to the museum is in keeping with history; visitors are given white and non-white identity cards to gain entry.
Gauteng Weather
Gauteng is widely considered to have one of the best climates in the world with warm summers and mild winters. Johannesburg, the capital and largest city in Gauteng, offers a very pleasant climate with weather being neither too hot nor too humid. Pretoria, another popular city in Gauteng, also enjoys enjoyable weather and is on average a few degrees warmer than Johannesburg.
