The Free State region of South Africa is a landlocked province offering expansive plains of sunflowers and maize. The region is surrounded by South Africa's two main rivers; the Vaal to the north and the Orange to the south. Each river has a dam which is often the focal point for tourists and nature enthusiasts. Jagersfontein Mine is an abandoned open pit mine dating back to 1888. Two of the largest diamonds ever discovered were taken from the site. Today you can visit the Open Mine Museum and Jagers Mining Village to learn more about early mining history.
The South African National Museum is located in Bloemfontein. The museum offers many diverse exhibits including life-size fibre glass elephants, a complete Euskelosaurus skeleton (one of the earliest known dinosaurs), a working beehive, live snakes and other reptiles along with a detailed history of the Free State region.
Golden Gate National Park takes its name from an impressive array of sandstone cliffs. The park provides a habitat for a wide range of animals including the rare bearded vulture along with wildebeest, zebra and springboks. There are many nature trails to explore on foot, as well as a variety of sporting activities on offer.

The Free State province of South Africa experiences a more extreme and desert climate, with parts of the region having snow in the winter and very hot and arid summers. Many parts of the region have water recreation facilities to allow residents and tourists to endure the high temperatures. Bloemfontein is the capital of the Free State region. The weather in Bloemfontein is typical of the province, and ranges from lows of -5 degrees Celsius in July and August to highs of over 30 degrees Celsius in January and February.
